ART IN RUINS PRIMER: THE BURDEN OF LEGACY

How do art institutions attempt to move forward in ways that draw upon their rich origins, while at the same time deploy those origins creatively, responsibly, audaciously.  How, in other words, is the past acknowledged without being trapped by it, or by allowing institutions of any kind to become ossified, and in turn, ossifying artists themselves and the the greater public’s understanding of art. But let’s not forget our responsibility to the future, which after all is what art is about; the hitherto unimagined possibilities of creative work, the place of artists and their potential impact on culture and society.
